What's the difference between obituaries and death notices, and how do I submit them?

Obituaries are news stories written about people of significance or particular interest, and are selected by the newsroom staff. Send suggestions and photos to crizk@detroitnews.com or call (313) 222-2300.

Death notices are paid announcements that are handled by the advertising department. Call: (586) 977-7500 Monday-Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 6 p.m., or use the online form at mideathnotices.com/.

How do I submit an op-ed commentary?

We accept submissions of commentaries of 600-750 words on current public policy and societal issues on the local, state, national and international scene. The work must be the author's own and it must be exclusive to The Detroit News in southeast Michigan.

How can I apply for an internship?

The Detroit News offers 12-week paid summer internships to college students who are juniors, seniors or recent college graduates. Interns provide their own housing and must have a car.

Applicants should have completed at least one prior internship or have had experience at student publications.

For summer internships, applications must be postmarked by the previous Nov. 15.

To apply, submit a cover letter, resume, seven to 10 work samples, three references, and a 300-word statement on your strongest influence in journalism. Mail your application package to:
